Writing the future of darkwave, from Brussels to the world

Few bands have managed to make the sound of Belgium feel as immediate as ULTRA SUNN.
Formed in Brussels in late 2019 by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Sam Huge and keyboardist and producer Gaelle Souflet, the duo quickly established themselves as one of the most distinctive acts to emerge from the new generation of darkwave and EBM.

Their music draws openly from the Belgian underground tradition, EBM, New Beat, Coldwave, industrial and house music, but treats that heritage as raw material rather than nostalgia.

The result is unmistakably ULTRA SUNN: heavy, physical and hypnotic, but also melodic and surprisingly direct. Sam’s deep, commanding voice sits over Gaelle’s precise synth work and relentless electronic rhythms, creating songs that can function equally well on a dancefloor, through headphones or in front of thousands of people.

Their story began with “Keep Your Eyes Peeled”, released in 2020. What started as an underground track quickly became a worldwide breakthrough, eventually surpassing 50 million streams and turning ULTRA SUNN into a name far beyond Brussels. The song established many of the themes that would become central to the band: vigilance, resilience, identity, vulnerability and the need to turn difficult experiences into something collective and powerful.

Three EPs followed, gradually building an international audience and a reputation for uncompromising live performances.

In 2023, ULTRA SUNN signed a worldwide multi-album deal with Canadian label Artoffact Records, marking the beginning of a new chapter.
Their first full-length album, US, arrived in 2024. The record expanded the band's sound without losing the starkness of its early work, and its release was celebrated with a sold-out show at Brussels' legendary Botanique.

From there, ULTRA SUNN took their music around the world, touring extensively throughout Europe, North America and Latin America.

Their live reputation grew rapidly. The duo performed at major festivals including Sick New World in Las Vegas, Substance Festival in Los Angeles, Sanctum Festival in Chicago, Dark Force Fest in New York, Verboden Festival in Vancouver, Øya Festival in Oslo, Grauzone in The Hague, Dour Festival in Belgium, Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig, Castle Party in Poland, Dark Malta and Amphi Festival in Germany.

They also shared stages with some of the defining names of electronic and industrial music, including Front 242, Nitzer Ebb and DAF, while collaborating with artists such as Front Line Assembly, and appearing alongside a new generation of darkwave acts including Twin Tribes and Kontravoid.

In Belgium, ULTRA SUNN have since played some of the country's most important venues, including Ancienne Belgique in Brussels.
Their international rise has taken them to L'Olympia in Paris and to The Belasco in Los Angeles, a progression that reflects just how far a project born in Brussels' underground has travelled in only a few years.

In 2024, the band was awarded Band of the Year at the Octave de la Musique, one of Belgium's most prestigious music awards.

ULTRA SUNN's ambition has never been simply to recreate the past. Their music may carry the unmistakable DNA of the Sound of Belgium, but the duo is interested in what can be done with it now. The pounding rhythms of EBM and New Beat become vehicles for songs about mental health, empowerment, identity, desire and survival. Darkness is present, but it is rarely the destination. There is always movement, release and, ultimately, light.

That idea became central to their second album, The Beast in You, released on October 3, 2025. Written through years of touring, travelling and constant exposure to new environments, the ten-track album pushes their sound further into melodic territory while retaining the physical intensity that defines their live shows. It is an album about confronting what lies beneath the surface, both personally and collectively, without ever losing the dancefloor.

The album also opened the door to new collaborations and visual territory. For “LA Drags”, ULTRA SUNN joined forces with international drag icon Violet Chachki for a video filmed in Los Angeles, bringing together two worlds built around transformation, performance and self-expression. The collaboration was followed by a cinematic video for the album's title track, “The Beast in You”, shot in a Hollywood studio.

Today, ULTRA SUNN occupy a rare position between underground credibility and genuine international reach. Their audience stretches across darkwave, EBM, goth, techno and alternative club culture, bringing together longtime followers of the Belgian electronic tradition with a younger generation discovering those sounds for the first time.

From Brussels to Sao Paulo, Berlin, New York and Los Angeles, the trajectory has been remarkably fast. The ambition remains the same as it was at the beginning: to make music that is physical enough to move a room, personal enough to mean something, and open enough for people to make it their own.

ULTRA SUNN are not looking back at the future of darkwave. They are already building it.
